Call for Abstracts

Successes and Failures

Deadline: 14 December 2018

Spark invites postgraduate scholars of all disciplines to submit proposed journal papers under the theme of successes and failures from their respective fields of study

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
– Winston Churchill

Successes and failures are common currency of everyday life. Pathways to success are often talked about, and the causes scrutinized. Science journals have been historically blamed for omitting the publication of failure (or negative findings). Yet how success and failure are defined will depend on the nature of the goal or objective. The next and 5th edition of SPARK will focus on overcoming obstacles and adversity, progress and learning in a variety of settings.

For this issue we seek articles about success and failure that might concern, for example:

  • Advances in science
  • Academic life
  • Technology
  • Health and sport
  • Social policy
  • History and politics
  • Education
  • Artistic endeavours
  • Professional or management practice

In the spirit of the journal, we welcome single-author or collaborative papers examining success and failure from a varied range of disciplines.

As a new feature, the journal also welcomes a ‘Letter to Editor’ submission of 1,500– 2,000 words. This is an opinion piece in the style of an essay, aimed to inform and prompt discussion on the topic.

For submissions, an initial abstract of approximately 200 words should be uploaded onto the form below by Friday 14 December 2018 at 11:59pm.

If the abstract is accepted, you will be contacted via email by the editorial committee and asked to submit a complete article of 3,000–5,000 words (or 1,500–2,000 in the case of a ‘Letter to the Editor’) by 30 April 2019. You are encouraged to review previously published articles here

Articles will be peer-reviewed and final versions published electronically as part of the 5th issue, to be available online in summer 2019.
